As we enter the NFL offseason it begins the time in which teams have to decide which of their free agents they plan on re-signing for next season. The Kansas City Chiefs have a few decisions they have to make in regards to cornerback Brandon Carr, wide recevier Dwayne Bowe, running back/full back Le'Ron McClain, and defensive end Wallace Gilberry. While Carr is the most important of these re-signings for the defense, McClain is just as important to this offense moving forward.
McClain had a very underrated season as he was brought in as a free agent from the Baltimore Ravens and was supposed to pave the way for All-Pro running back Jamaal Charles. When Charles got injured early in the season it changed the dynamic of the entire Chiefs offense.
But throughout the course of the season we got to see McClain catch passes out of the backfield and run the ball effectively whenever asked. Most people don't think the Chiefs will be bringing back veteran running back Thomas Jones next season. I believe that a lot of those carries that Jones had last season can go to McClain next season. McClain has the ability to run the ball and block as a full back, but he also gives his pass-catching ability that defenses have to respect when he's on the field.
Scott Pioli preaches versatility from his players. McClain can play special teams, full back, carry the ball in short yardage situations and catch the ball out of the backfield. Oh yeah, and not to mention that fact that he's one of the more vocal players on the team that consistently showed last season that he generally cares about winning and about his teammates. He's exactly the kind of player that Pioli has talked about wanting in Kansas City and to build around. And to top it off, McClain says he wants to stay in Kansas City. via ESPN.com
"Throughout the year, we were all over a little bit. We came to a common ground over the last three weeks," said fullback Le'Ron McClain, who is a free agent but has said he hopes to return to the team next season. "We started doing good when Romeo stepped in."
I guess we can chalk up McClain as one of the players that is very happy about Crennel getting the permanent head coaching job with the Chiefs. Hopefully McClain can get the same kind of extension Crennel just received, right around three years.
