LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Next year's Academy Awards ceremony - the highlight of the annual movie awards season - will be held on March 2, a week later than normal, so as not to clash with the Winter Olympics in Russia in February, organizers said on Monday.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences also announced a February 22 date for the 2015 Oscar ceremony and said both awards shows will be televised live as usual by ABC from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
The Winter Olympics are to be held in Sochi, Russia, from February 7-23, forcing several of Hollywood's big awards shows to shift their traditional dates to avoid a clash with blanket TV coverage of the games.
The Screen Actors Guild Awards, one of the key ceremonies ahead of the Oscars, has already announced that its 2014 ceremony will move back from the end of January to January 18.
The Golden Globes ceremony, Hollywood's second biggest awards show, has for the past 10 years taken place in Beverly Hills in mid-January but organizers have yet to announce a date for the 2014 show.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which hands out the Oscars, has shifted its awards ceremony in the past to avoid competition from the Winter Olympics.
ABC Television is a unit of Walt Disney Co.. The Winter Olympics will be broadcast in the United States by NBC, a unit of Comcast Corp.

Swedish photographer Goran Strand created a 10-image mosaic of the sun using a hydrogen-alpha filter on March 16, and then captured full-sky views of the northern lights over Ostersund during a four-hour period on March 17 for this time-lapse video. "The time lapse consists of 2,464 raw images for a total data amount of 30GB. ... All in all, this movie contains over 40GB of data that I've been processing over the last five days. Talk about dancing with the stars: The glow of the northern lights danced through the night sky this week, thanks to a solar storm that swept past Earth over the past few days. Comet PanSTARRS, which is appearing a little bit farther north in western skies every evening, adds some extra sparkle.
The time around the equinox is considered the peak of the aurora season, because this time of year strikes a balance between the dark skies of winter and the more clement temperatures of summer. And although PanSTARRS may not have panned out the way some of the more optimistic skywatchers might have expected, it's still observable in the Northern Hemisphere?? particularly if you're watching with binoculars from a vantage point far from city lights, with a clear view to the western horizon.

For example, French photographer Sylvain Dussans managed to capture both phenomena in one glorious picture, taken from Norway's Senja Island.

This movie from NASA's Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory, or STEREO, shows Comet PanSTARRS as it moved around the sun from March 10 to 15. The clip is repeated three times. The images were captured by the Heliospheric Imager, an instrument that looks to the side of the sun to watch coronal mass ejections as they travel toward Earth, which is the unmoving bright orb on the right. The bright light on the left comes from the sun, and the bursts from the left represent the solar material erupting off the sun.

CHICAGO, IL Research presented today at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine's Specialty Day in Chicago, IL shows that biceps tenodesis surgery is safe and effective for individuals who suffer a SLAP (superior labral anterior posterior) tear of the shoulder. Patients examined had previously undergone unsuccessful arthroscopic repair for their injuries.
"Our research focused on a sample of 42 active-duty men and women who were unable to return to duty after primary arthroscopic SLAP repair," said Frank McCormick, MD, and CDR Matthew T. Provencher, MD, MC, USN, lead authors of the study, from Rush University Medical Center in Chicago and the Naval Medical Center in San Diego. "After performing the more traditional biceps tenodesis surgery, (81%) of patients returned to pre-injury level of activity and were able to return to active duty."
None of the patients in the study reported a failure after their secondary, revision surgery and all reported significant improvement in their shoulder range of motion, from a mean of 142 degrees of abduction to 165 degrees at final follow-up. The patients had initially demonstrated an inability to lift, perform push-ups and do overhead activities after their failed primary surgeries.
"While our research focused on military personnel, we believe acknowledging their return to full activity serves as a suitable comparison to a traditional, active population," noted Provencher. "This provides important information about handling a failed SLAP repair and provides an example of new treatment courses for others in the future."
Biceps tenodesis treatment involves relocating the biceps tendon to alleviate pain and dysfunction as well as prevent tears from forming in the shoulder tissue.

Julius Genachowski is out as chairman of the Federal Communications Commission. Capping off a four-year stint as the country?s top telecom regulator, Genachowski was responsible for pushing network-neutrality rules as well as killing the T-Mobile/AT&T merger of 2011. But he also leaves a lot for his successor to do. Here's what's ahead, over the short, medium, and long terms:
Net neutrality. Although the commission passed a rule in late 2010 prohibiting Internet providers from giving priority to certain kinds of Web traffic, the decision is in the middle of a legal challenge, and a ruling is expected to come down this spring. If the verdict goes against the FCC, service providers will have another opportunity to enact rules on traffic discrimination.
The IP transition. The FCC is overseeing a gradual process in which telecom operators are replacing much of their backbone?the infrastructure responsible for connecting phone calls?with fiberoptic cables. Major service providers have argued that this new system, which operates on Internet protocol, deserves a new set of rules and regulations. Smaller companies, meanwhile, want older copper networks to be preserved to some extent. Whomever succeeds Genachowski will have a large role to play in this battle.
The spectrum auction. In 2014, television broadcasters will be selling off unused parts of the wireless spectrum to the government. Because there?s only so much of the airwaves for companies to send their data over, spectrum is incredibly valuable. Once the auction is complete, Washington plans to turn around and sell some of the spectrum to wireless carriers. They?ll use the new spectrum to build out their cell-phone infrastructure, while the parts the government keeps will be opened up for anyone to use. Exactly how those proportions break down is something the FCC will do a lot to determine.
