Mika Salo thinks Fernando Alonso still favourite for title ? Formula 1 news

Former Ferrari and Sauber driver, Mika Salo has said that Fernando Alonso is still one of the most favourite drivers in the 2012 Formula 1 World Championship.

Salo said that Alonso has performed tremendously well, in the season until now, even with the car which is not competitive enough relatively to his rivals.

Moreover, he said that the Spaniard has scored points with admirable consistency and has not made any mistakes as compared to his major opponent, Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing who is presently leading the drivers? championship.

?There is a common perception among the drivers that Alonso will win the championship this year. Keep in mind that Ferrari was not competitive at the beginning of the year, but Alonso has led almost the entire way until now,? Salo said. ?He hasn?t made any mistakes throughout the year, which is different to Vettel.?

In addition, he said that Vettel has performed well in the races in which he has started from the front of the grid. Conversely, the 31-year-old has shown excellent pace in the season so far even starting from behind.

?Vettel gets the job done when he is driving alone at the front, but he is not as rational as Alonso in racing situations,? he said.

?Alonso on the other hand would prefer 18 points to none,? he added.

The defending champion has become very strong after claiming his third consecutive victory in the Korean Grand Prix and has a lead of 6 points over Alonso. However, it will be important to note that the Ex-F1 driver, Niki Lauda has said that Vettel has not yet won the title and anything can happen as there are still four races to go.

On the other hand, Romain Grosjean of Lotus has said that the 25-year-old is surely in a stronger position to win the championship and has become almost unbeatable now.

Red Bull and Ferrari are planning to come up stronger in the forthcoming races. It will be thrilling to see how the top two contenders perform in the remainder of the season and who takes the title in the end.

Techono.me Names Dating App Heystack It?s Top Startup For 2012

A6DMs13CUAAxplsSome say Tel Aviv is almost like having Silicon Valley on Europe's doorstep, and you do get that feeling sometimes. The urgency of the people and their sheer energy is infectious. It's not for nothing that VCs take regular flights there and multinational tech companies like Microsoft establish accelerators. And the local scene throws up a tonne of initiatives. One of the best is Techono.me. Organised by Orli Yakuel and Edward Resnick, Techono.me 2009, 2010, 2011 were all supported by TechCrunch, and we're doing that again because it's a great platform for Israeli companies to announce their new products. Put it this way, in 2009 Face.com emerged from the event, and was this year bought by Facebook for around $60 million. So let's get into the companies that launched. The winner of event was Heystack.

(AP Photo/Geert Vanden Wijngaert)

BRUSSELS (AP) ? European leaders were drawing battle lines Thursday as they headed for a summit in Brussels, with France pushing back against Germany's call for a new EU czar with wide powers to veto countries' budgets.

In an address to Parliament ahead of the meeting, German Chancellor Angela Merkel endorsed a proposal for the EU's monetary affairs commissioner to become an enforcer of the bloc's budget rules ? including the power to refuse member countries' proposed budgets and send them back for changes.

Germany hopes that having a "budget czar" ? a move that's been bandied about for months ? will keep governments from overspending and needing new, expensive bailouts. But some countries, like France, are wary of handing control over their finances to unelected bureaucrats in a foreign capital.

"I am astonished that, no sooner does someone make a progressive proposal ... the cry immediately comes that this won't work, Germany is isolated, we can't do it," Merkel said. She insisted Germany would continue to push for the proposal.

President Francois Hollande of France ? increasingly the counterpoint to Germany's weight in the EU ? brushed off the suggestion as simply not on the table at this summit.

"The only decision that we have to take, to confirm, is putting in place a banking union by the end of the year," he said. "The first step is a banking supervisor."

Hollande wants the bank supervisor in place because leaders have agreed that, once there is proper supervision, struggling financial institutions will be able to tap Europe's bailout fund directly. That would be a huge relief to countries like Spain, which are facing the prospect of taking on enormous debts ? and worrying markets in the process ? in order to bail out their banks.

Or at least, it seemed European leaders had agreed to that in June. Since then, Germany, the Netherlands and Finland have muddied the waters and put the brakes on any decision about a banking union.

That could mean that few concrete decisions will emerge from meetings of the 27 national leaders in Brussels on Thursday and Friday.

Merkel again insisted Thursday that "quality must come before speed" in setting up the bank supervisor.

"There are a lot of very complicated legal questions, and I am not making the issue more difficult than it actually is," Merkel said.

It used to be that the French and German leaders would privately agree on a united position before arriving in Brussels for summits ? and often strong-arm the rest of the group into going along. That was before Hollande, a Socialist, was elected.

He and Merkel, a conservative, have a thornier relationship, but the two were meeting one-on-one on the sidelines of the summit Thursday.

With unemployment skyrocketing and growth grinding to a halt around the continent, the back-and-forth is beginning to frustrate some European officials. Jose Manuel Barroso, who is president of the EU's executive arm, the European Commission, criticized the heel-dragging ahead of the meeting.

"There is not all over Europe the same sense of urgency," said Barroso.

With no relief in sight for beleaguered Spain, the question of whether it will ask for a bailout itself will likely be discussed. The government in Madrid said this week that it would decide in the coming weeks ? although it is still hoping it can avoid asking for any kind of aid. Such requests represent a blow to a country's pride, and the governments that ask for them can get thrown out of office.

But the political pressure on Spain is great because should investors become convinced that Madrid will not request aid, they may once again sell off the country's bonds, causing its borrowing rates to rise. If Spain were to be locked out of bond markets because of excessively high rates, the 17 countries that make up the eurozone would have to rescue it at huge financial cost.

"It would be helpful ... if Spain asked for ESM (European bailout fund) aid," said Herman Van Rompuy, who is president of the European Council, the body composed of the leaders of all the EU countries. "But it is up to Spain to make up its mind."

Leaders could also discuss Greece, where rioters were pelting police with Molotov cocktails and chunks of marble on Thursday to protest the stringent budget cuts the country has had to implement to secure its rescue loans.

Greece's bailout creditors ? the EU, the International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank ? have been engaged in tough negotiations in recent weeks over more budget cuts. The group of creditors, known collectively as the troika, has said it won't release the next batch of loans until more savings are made. Without those loans, Greece will default and probably be forced to leave the eurozone.

Budget cuts have been blamed for sinking many countries in Europe into recession and have unleashed protests around the continent.

Van Rompuy said countries were starting to see the first positive effects of austerity, with deficit levels down and borrowing costs falling. But countries "are still suffering a lot," he said. Some 25 million people are without a job in the EU and economic growth prospects are weak.

Long-term proposals for overhauling the EU will likely be key topics of debate in Brussels. They include creating a European budget that could be used to support countries going through deep recessions ? as Spain and Greece are now. That idea appeared in a report Van Rompuy put together for the summit, but has met with some stiff opposition.

Govt plans home loan subsidies for newly married couples | Firstpost

New Delhi: There?s hope for married couples forced to share living space with other adults in a single-room house: The government is planning to offer them highly subsidised bank loans to build additional space. India has close to 15 million married couples who share living quarters with other adults for want of housing.

Moving beyond tackling India?s urban housing shortage, pegged at 18.78 million, the government is planning to help out couples living in congested circumstances, as well as those living in old dilapidated houses ? numbering 2.27 million.

?This is very much on the anvil ? to help in improvement of the structure, rather than build a brand new house,? Arun K Misra, Secretary in the Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation ministry, said.

?Such people can build additional facilities, like add extra rooms, to ease congestion,? he said, adding that the government is changing its subsidy support scheme under which individuals can take housing loans for home improvement.

The proposal for interest subsidy on loans for home improvement is to go to the union cabinet in the near future, he added.

Pic used for representational purposes only.

The government is also planning to rope in the private sector to build affordable housing.

?It is a new policy scheme under which the private sector will be encouraged to build houses,? Misra said, adding that the sector would provide incentives to the builders in the form of ?capital subsidy or through transferring the development rights of the land on the basis of its floor area ratio?.

This would help make the private sector an ?important player? in constructing affordable housing for the urban poor, said the official.

?This proposal is also going to the cabinet,? he added.

The ministry is soon to set up a task force on affordable housing, Misra said.

?The task force will come up with a definite report. We will come to know the states where there is deficiency in urban housing and approach those states,? said the official.

The government is also planning to contact banks to provide loans to those belonging to the economically weaker sections (EWS) under the credit risk guarantee fund.

The cabinet had in March cleared setting up of the credit risk guarantee fund trust with an initial corpus of Rs.1,200 crore to give a push to housing for low-income groups.

?The government will stand guarantor for the EWS people who seek loans under the scheme to build or repair houses,? Misra said.

?The banks will give loans to the poor for Rs.5 lakh or less,? he said, adding that the ?definition of EWS had changed to those earning Rs.8,000 per month from the earlier Rs.5,000 per month.?

The ministry is planning to hold a meeting on Oct 29 with the banks and state governments to inform them about the scheme.

Asked what the government would do in case the people defaulted on loans, Misra said that they ?had observed that the poor people were regular in payments, unless there is a pressing need.?

Another important move is for amendment of the rent control act to make it attractive for house owners to rent out their vacant rooms/houses and also go in for building new homes for the purpose of renting, he said.

The ministry is approaching state governments to amend the act, which is loaded heavily in favour of tenants.

?We want the house owners and tenants to enter into an agreement of their choice,? said Misra and cited the case of Bangalore and Hyderabad where the huge working force catering to the IT and other major sectors reside mostly in rented accommodation.

?In these cities, hundreds of young people stay in rented accommodation,? Misra said.

Around 11 million houses are lying vacant, which the government hopes to tap.

The figures are from a task force report on urban housing shortage of the ministry.

Jack Dorsey Confirms He No Longer Has An ... - Business Insider

This just in from Jack Dorsey's personal blog:

There was a?great profile?in the New York Times about Twitter?s CEO, Dick Costolo, which mentioned my work at the company. It?s not a common arrangement, so I?d like to clarify a few points.

In Spring of 2011, Dick asked me to take an operational role overseeing product, design, and brand. Our shared goal was to get those organizations back under him as soon as possible, simply because it was the right thing to do for the company. We moved all of my reports back under him in January of this year after leadership was firmly in place. This allowed me to focus on refining our brand and logo, to work more with Dick and the leadership team on our direction forward, and ultimately return the majority of my time to Square, where I?m CEO. I?m back to going to Twitter on Tuesday afternoons, something I started before taking the interim operational role.

We haven?t talked about this publicly because it?s not what people using Twitter every day care about.

I?m fortunate in life to be a part of two foundational and mission-driven organizations, and I?m always going fight like hell to?make them thrive. And they are! Now back to our work.

FACT CHECK: A One-Sided Story on Trade, Defense

Mitt Romney solely blamed President Barack Obama on Monday for potential defense cuts that Republicans in Congress worked out with the White House and Democrats and left the misimpression that Obama has ignored free trade initiatives.

A closer look at some of the Republican presidential nominee's statements in his foreign policy speech:

ROMNEY: "I will roll back President Obama's deep and arbitrary cuts to our national defense that would devastate our military."

THE FACTS: "Arbitrary" defense cuts do not belong to Obama alone but also to congressional Republicans, including his vice presidential running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan. The first round of cuts in projected defense spending is the result of a bipartisan deal in August 2011 between Congress and the White House to wrestle down the deficit. Unless a new budget deal is reached in time, additional spending cuts will begin in January across government, and the cost to the Pentagon would be $500 billion over a decade. Lawmakers are working to avoid that. Separately, Obama wants to slow the growth of military spending, now that the war in Iraq is ended and the war in Afghanistan is drawing to a close. The Pentagon's budget, including war costs, is $670 billion this year, or about 18 percent of total federal spending. Even setting aside the costs of the wars, military spending has more than doubled since 2001.

At its heart, Romney's statement marks a disagreement with Obama over the proper level of military spending but also skips past a deficit-reduction deal that he recently criticized Republicans in Congress for negotiating.

???

ROMNEY: "The president has not signed one new free trade agreement in the past four years. "

THE FACTS: Obama hasn't opened new trade negotiations, but he's completed some big ones, overcoming opposition from fellow Democrats to do so. After taking office, he revived a free-trade deal with Colombia that had been negotiated by his Republican predecessor but left to languish without congressional approval and sought similar progress with South Korean and Panamanian free-trade pacts. The president delayed submitting the three deals to Congress while he tried to placate Democrats who opposed some of the terms, but finally submitted them in 2011, and Congress approved them.

???

ROMNEY: "I will recommit America to the goal of a democratic, prosperous Palestinian state living side by side in peace and security with the Jewish state of Israel. On this vital issue, the president has failed, and what should be a negotiation process has devolved into a series of heated disputes at the United Nations. In this old conflict, as in every challenge we face in the Middle East, only a new president will bring the chance to begin anew."

THE FACTS: With this statement, Romney has moved toward the balance enshrined in U.S. policy from one administration to another on the question of Israelis and Palestinians and away from his provocative remarks to a May fundraiser that recently came to light.

In those remarks, he said "the Palestinians have no interest whatsoever in establishing peace," ''the pathway to peace is almost unthinkable to accomplish," Palestinians are "committed to the destruction and elimination of Israel" and it would be "the worst idea in the world" to put pressure on the Israelis to give up something in hopes Palestinians would respond accordingly.

Now he is appearing to put faith in a negotiation process he all but dismissed before.

???

ROMNEY: "As the dust settles, as the murdered (in the Libya consulate attack) are buried, Americans are asking how this happened, how the threats we face have grown so much worse, and what this calls on America to do."

THE FACTS: It's unclear whether terrorism has gotten worse. There has been no incident even remotely comparable in scope or symbolic meaning to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. After a score of counterterrorist successes, the Obama administration has been knocked back on its heels since the attacks' 11th anniversary, when assailants stormed the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, and killed a U.S. ambassador and three other Americans. There has also been an uptick in attacks on American troops by supposedly friendly Afghan forces. But many counterterrorist experts say al-Qaida has been significantly weakened and the threats of global terrorism significantly better countered over the last decade.

???

ROMNEY: "When we look at the Middle East today ? with Iran closer than ever to nuclear weapons capability, with the conflict in Syria threating to destabilize the region, with violent extremists on the march and with an American ambassador and three others dead likely at the hands of al-Qaida affiliates ? it is clear that the risk of conflict in the region is higher now than when the president took office."

THE FACTS: Risk is always a matter of perception, so it doesn't fall easily into the realm of truth vs. fiction. But for the United States and the region, it's not clear that conflict has increased in the last four years. Obama entered office in 2009 with the United States still engaged in a conflict in Iraq. U.S. troops are no longer there. And he came as Israel and Hamas just finished a three-week war. That was two years after another war between Israel and an Iranian-backed force, in that case, Hezbollah in Lebanon.

There has been no significant Israeli military conflict since Obama has come into office. That said, Syria's conflict has become the region's deadliest since the Iraq war. The U.S. has stayed out of that conflict under Obama.

Vitamin variants could combat cancer as scientists unravel B12 secrets

ScienceDaily (Oct. 8, 2012) ? In a development that may lead to new drugs to treat cancer, scientists at the University of Kent have discovered the process by which a key vitamin (B12) is made in cells.

A team at the University's School of Biosciences led by Professor Martin Warren devised a method that allows them to study how the individual steps for vitamin B12 construction are pieced together. B12 is an essential nutrient that plays an important role in the formation of red blood cells and the maintenance of the nervous system. Deficiencies are associated with anemia, cardiovascular disorders and dementia.

Using techniques of the new discipline of synthetic biology, researchers engineered a conveyor belt of molecular machines for the construction of the vitamin within bacteria. By varying the length of the assembly line, they were able to unravel how the vitamin is manufactured.

Significantly, the team were also able to alter some of the molecular machines on the conveyor belt and change the form of the vitamin that is made. It is hoped that these novel variant forms of the vitamin will act as important new drugs to treat diseases such as cancer and infections such as tuberculosis (TB).

The team's research paper An enzyme-trap approach allows isolation of intermediates in cobalamin (vitamin B12) biosynthesis is published in the current edition of the journal Nature Chemical Biology, the leading scientific journal in the field.

Professor Warren, who is Head of the School of Biosciences, said: 'This is a really important step forward. Vitamin B12 is a nutrient that is only made by bacteria and is not present in plants. Therefore a significant proportion of the world's population, including vegetarians, are at risk of B12 deficiency.

'Our work will assist in the generation of better ways of making more of this vitamin available and is also permitting us to make new compounds that will literally allow us to throw a spanner in the works of infections such as TB and diseases such as cancer.'

The Kent team worked with several partners including new biotechnology company Cangenix, based at the School of Biosciences, and researchers at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL). The research was funded by a research grant from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council to Professor Warren and Professor Richard Pickersgill of QMUL.

HOME IMPROVEMENT: Home remodeling projects that pay you back

Are you eager to renovate parts of your home but aren't sure which projects will actually add value to it? Before you start ripping out walls or buying expensive faucets, learn which remodeling projects can actually pay you back when you decide to sell.

Homeowners across the country are trying to increase the value of their homes through remodeling projects.

In fact, 30 percent of homeowners say their main reason for a home remodel was to increase the value of their home, according to an October 2011 national survey of homeowners and renters, commissioned by Hanley Wood LLC, a media and information company in the housing and construction arena.

But just what is a home renovation worth?

"Everything you do to improve your home can add some value," says Steve Melman, director of economic services for the National Association of Home Builders in Washington, D.C. But Melman adds an important caveat: "Paybacks for remodeling have been falling, just like the price of homes," so it's important to know which projects will give you the most bang for your buck.

Fortunately, there are certain remodeling projects that could pay off big down the road. Keep reading to learn more...

Remodeling Investment #1 - Replace Siding

One of the top remodeling projects for adding value to your home isn't anything too complicated or arduous. It's as simple as replacing the siding on the outside of your home.

Just like we dress for success on job interviews, your home needs to make a good first impression on potential buyers when they see it from the street. In the real estate world, this is called curb appeal.

In fact, if you replace your exterior siding with fiber-cement - a composite material made of sand, cement, and cellulose - your home could recoup 78 percent of the average nationwide cost of the project, $13,641, according to a 2011-2012 "Cost vs. Value Report" conducted by Remodeling magazine.

If you want to shell out a little less, try vinyl siding, which costs about $11,729 and has an average recoup percentage of 69.5. Foam-backed vinyl siding is also available for a similar recoup value, though it comes with a higher price tag of $14,274.

Seven of the top 10 projects in Remodeling's report are classified as siding, window, or door replacement. These projects cost less than $19,000 and boast an average cost-to-value ratio between 69 and 78 percent. Clearly, making a home's exterior look good can entice more potential buyers to see what else it has to offer.

Remodeling Investment #2 - Replace Old Windows

Want to make a great remodeling investment in your home and feel good about it?

Updating your windows could be the answer. Whether you select vinyl or wood windows to replace drafty old ones, you can recoup up to 69.1 percent of the project's cost on your home's resale value, according to Remodeling's "Cost vs. Value Report." Window replacement costs average from a low $11,000 to $19,000.

New windows do so much for the look of a home inside and out, and as Melman points out, they make cleaning a breeze (pun intended).

"I have a 90-year-old home with old windows," says Melman. "When you try to clean them, the ropes that lift them up usually break. It's a pain, and they aren't insulated like the new windows." If this scenario sounds all too familiar, you're not alone.

According to the Hanley Wood survey, "More than half of the nation's 76 million owner-occupied homes were built prior to 1970." That means there are a lot of old windows out there that need some serious TLC.

Remodeling Investment #3 - Install a New Roof

Frosting on a cake - it's what buyers see when they drive up to a home with a brand-spanking-new roof.

If missing roof tiles are making your home look like it's seen better days, it might be time to invest in something new and attractive that could pay back more than half of the construction costs.

An upscale new roof using standing-seam metal can be quite costly, demanding a $37,481

price tag on average, and only paying back 54.5 percent of its cost at resale, according to the Remodeling magazine report. However, a less expensive roof update could give you an even larger cut of the pie. In fact, fiberglass asphalt shingles cost approximately $21,000 and offer 57.8 percent of the cost back in increased home value.

And with new roofing innovations, finding materials that are effective - yet affordable - is easier than ever.

"Manufacturers are coming up with new materials all the time for roofs that help with energy costs and noise reduction, plus they are less costly," adds Melman. You can select metal or asphalt shingles or even composite materials, which look like slate without the big price tag.

Remodeling Investment # 4 - Replace Countertops

If you don't have money for a complete kitchen remodel, replacing your old countertops won't break the bank. Plus, new countertops could update the entire room and add great value to your home.

According to Remodeling magazine's survey, even a minor kitchen remodel - including replacing the countertop, sink, faucets, wall oven, and cooktop - costs on average only $20,000. The payback? Up to 72.1 percent of the project's cost could be covered by your home's increase in value.

And the options are virtually limitless. "You only had one or two choices in countertops 20 years ago. Now you have 500 choices," Melman says. "Granite is still the most popular. But there are new kinds of engineered concrete, soapstone, quartz, and other materials that can add value to your home."

It's really up to you how fancy you want to make your countertop. On the low end, laminate could cost as little as $10 per square foot, while more premium materials could be 10 times that, according to Consumer Reports. Beveled or other types of different shaped edging will up the price an additional $10 to $50 per linear square foot.

Remodeling Investment #5 - Reface Kitchen Cabinets

Why put in $100,000 into a kitchen remodel with custom cabinets if you can't get that money back when you sell your home? Good news: there are less expensive ways to spruce up your cabinets, and they offer a greater cost-benefit, too.

Just consider that a thorough refacing project, or semi-custom cabinet remodel, could cost about $9,000, according to Consumer Reports. Now, that's a lot less than $100,000.

Cabinet refacing is a quick, affordable, and relatively hassle-free alternative that can completely transform a kitchen, adding instant beauty and value. Instead of ripping out all of your cabinets and starting from scratch, professionals can replace cabinet doors and drawer fronts and apply veneers to face frames and ends.

"I have someone coming in to reface my old cabinets," says Melman. "They are taking off the doors and changing them out along with the knobs. It will make it look like a brand-new kitchen."

Remodeling Investment #6 - Upgrade the Bathroom

When it's going to take more than just a can of paint to fix up your old bathroom, it's time to consider a more substantial remodel. A clean, bright, and remodeled bathroom attracts just about everyone - including potential buyers.

A midrange bathroom remodel will cost on average about $16,552, according to Remodeling magazine's survey. But by replacing old fixtures, floors, sink, toilet, and bathing area - with something more modern - you could reap great rewards from the money you spend. In fact, about 62.2 percent of those costs could go back into your pocket when you decide to put your house on the market.

"Bathrooms can be a lot less expensive to remodel than a kitchen," says Melman. For example, instead of many cabinets to replace, you only have one. Plus, kitchens have larger floors and more appliances to buy, whereas bathrooms are usually simpler with small floors.

Remodeling Investment #7 - Add a Deck

Want to have more barbeques and summer parties, and add value to your home while doing it? Then it's time to extend your living space into the great outdoors with a warmly inviting deck.

But just how much value could it add?

According to Remodeling magazine's "Cost vs. Value Report," a wood deck costing $10,350 could repay you 70.1 percent of the project cost once the house sells. Decks made of a composite material can cost about $15,579 with a 62.8 percent payback.

While they may cost a little more, the composite decks are definitely the trend now, says Tom Reinhofer, co-owner of Georgetown Decks and Construction in Vernon Hills, Ill. "Ninety-nine percent of the decks I design and build are with composite," he says."These things are stain and fade-resistant."

This last point is a key one for Reinhofer, as paying for annual maintenance on a wood deck adds up over time.

NYPD officer who shot unarmed motorist 'eager' to tell his story

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The New York police detective who fatally shot an unarmed motorist last week is "more than eager" to tell his side of the story to any investigating authorities, his attorney said Monday after receiving word the city's police commissioner called for a grand jury probe of the incident.

New York Detective Hassan Hamdy's "pulling the trigger did not occur in a bubble," said attorney Philip Karasyk. "Way before that happened, the driver was acting in such a manner as to continuously raise the level of threat" to the police, he said.

The police said Hamdy shot Noel Polanco, 22, just after 5 a.m. on October 4 after pulling the U.S. Army reservist over for erratic driving on a Queens highway. Karasyk said his client maintains that Polanco ignored police orders to put his hands in the air and instead reached down with both hands to the car's floorboard.

An NYPD statement released last week is consistent with Krasyk's description of the lead-up to the shooting.

But witness Diane DeFerrari, 37, a bartender whom Polanco was driving home from her work at a Queens nightclub, said Polanco's hands never left the wheel, according to attorney Sanford Rubenstein, who is also representing Polanco's mother.

The conflicting accounts have led New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly to call for a grand jury investigation into the shooting, The New York Post reported on Monday.

The shooting "will require what I believe to be a grand jury investigation to determine precisely what happened there," Kelly told the paper.

An NYPD spokesman did not respond to requests for comment on Kelly's remarks.

Karasyk declined to make Hamdy available for an interview.

Queens District Attorney Richard Brown has launched an investigation into the incident, as has the NYPD.

A funeral for Polanco with U.S. military honors is being planned, Rubenstein added.
